INDIGENE CRAFT

Maker’s Corner is our new initiative to bring designers closer to our readers. This is where we ask them a few questions about their life, profession and everything in between! They get to share their stories and tips in their own words with you all.

Today we welcome Ruchi Tripathi and Jaya Bhatt from Indigene Crafts. Let’s hear what the designer duo have to say.

Introduction

Both of us (Jaya & Ruchi) are textile design graduates from The National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi. Having worked in the craft sector with grass-root organizations and on independent design and research projects for almost about 7 years, we decided to start Indigene, a conscious clothing label with a passion for all things handmade. Translating traditional handcrafting techniques into contemporary aesthetics and styling. Lending our own perspective to handmade and turning it into a larger, yet deeply personal, statement.

Our years of work with artisan communities and our travels to places far and wide have been our inspiration for Indigene. The creativity and aesthetic that lies in these regions and the natural born designers that the artisans are, has always attracted us towards the concept of hand crafted and handmade, rooted, organic and native is the base of Indigene.

What is your take on the Indian designers today?

Indian designers are definitely going global, reaching new heights and new markets. Their creativity is finally being recognized at several international platforms.

Who is/are your favourite designer/s and what amazes you about him/her and their designs

There are so many designers new and old, who are doing such inspiring work. A couple of designers that we look up to are Valentino for his use of gorgeous embroideries, Yohji Yamamoto for his structured garments, Daniella Gregis for her organic use of fabrics and easy styling.

According to you who is the style icon of India i.e Male and female, of this generation?
